Salt Cellars |
Q.) What is a Salt Cellar? - Salt Cellars
also known as Salt Dips or Open Salts. These date back to the early 1800's. Salt was placed in a master salt on a dinner table. Each place setting at the table included a small salt cellar. The master salt was passed to each individual who would place salt in the salt cellar at his or her setting. Then that individual would sprinkle the desired salt on their food. Some may have pinched the desired amount of if you came from a well to do family you probably used a silver salt spoon. Today, Salt Cellars are not used for the purpose they were once intended for. Today salt cellars are collected by many people because of the unique patterns and colors. Most of the old Salt cellars came in Pink, Green or Crystal with a few exceptions. Some of the most sought after Salt Cellars, were made by Sandwich Glass. Today many carnival glass collectors have added salt cellars to their collections! Can you imagine sitting at a dinner table back in those times? Wouldn't that have be something! |
